What are human hormones?
Human hormones control a variety of everyday functions in your body. These include the sex hormones estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Synthetic versions of these hormones are used in certain pharmaceuticals.

Human hormones have been detected in tap water in 23 U.S. states, affecting nearly 20 million people. Hormones can make their way into tap water through a variety of sources. These include human waste (hormones from medication can be released through the urine), (birth control hormones are released into sewers through urine and medications that are often get flushed down the toilet for disposal), pharmaceutical industry waste, livestock waste ((from animals treated with hormones)), and landfills ((where medications that are thrown in the trash end up). While hormones are not currently regulated in drinking water, a number of them have been added to the Environmental Protection Agency’s watchlist of potentially harmful contaminants.

Consuming hormones can alter your body’s natural production and cause both acute and severe health issues. These include certain hormone-responsive cancers, male infertility, and obesity.
How much human hormone consumption is safe?
The amount of human hormone consumption that is considered safe is up for debate. However, these hormones have been shown to cause health effects at low levels in animal studies. Human studies to determine the health consequences of consuming human hormones in tap water, and in what amounts, are ongoing.
How do I remove human hormones from my tap water?
Clearly Filtered® with Affinity® Filtration Technology gives you the power to remove up to 99.9% of human hormones from your tap water, giving you peace of mind that comes from knowing your drinking water is finally clean and safe. Basic water filters that rely on simple carbon or charcoal are only effective at removing unpleasant odors and taste. These filters are not capable of stopping human hormones and instead allow them to pass right through the filter into the water you're drinking. More sophisticated technology like Clearly Filtered is required to provide this type of contaminant removal.
