What are microplastics?
Microplastics are tiny particles of plastic that are mostly invisible to the naked eye. They can either be manufactured at this microscopic size or result from the breakdown of larger manmade plastics.
Are microplastics in my tap water?
Microplastics are present in 94% of drinking water supplies across the U.S., but they are not yet regulated.1 This means if you aren’t filtering them out of your water, you’re probably drinking them. The dangers of ingesting microplastics have only recently come to light, and as time goes on and studies are completed, more will become known about their prevalence and health risks. Pollution is the most common source of microplastic contamination. Anywhere you see plastic litter, microplastics have the opportunity to pollute the water supply. One study reported that a woman may consume as many as 12 particles a day and a man up to 16, based on the daily beverage intake recommended by the National Academy of Medicine and tap water contamination levels. These daily doses add up to an annual total of nearly 4,400 particles for women and over 5,800 particles for men.2
Are microplastics in my tap water harmful?
The health effects of microplastics are still unknown. Researchers have only just discovered this issue in the last couple of years, and the health impact studies take years to complete. It is too soon to tell. However, the chemicals used to make plastic have been linked to cancer and numerous other illnesses. Microplastics can leach toxic substances (BPA and phthalates, for example) and retain chemicals and bacteria. These can then be released back into the body where they can have harmful effects.
How much microplastic is safe?
There is currently no legal or safe limit in place for microplastics, as it is a new and emerging contaminant. However, based on the known carcinogenicity of the materials used to make plastic, the cautious answer would be that no amount of microplastic ingestion is safe.
How do I remove microplastics from my tap water?
Clearly Filtered® with Affinity® Filtration Technology gives you the power to remove up to 99.9% of microplastics from your tap water, giving you peace of mind that comes from knowing your drinking water is finally clean and safe. Basic water filters that rely on simple carbon or charcoal are only effective at removing unpleasant odors and taste. These filters are not capable of stopping microplastics and instead allows them to pass right through the filter into the water you're drinking. More sophisticated technology like Clearly Filtered is required to provide this type of contaminant removal.
