What are PFAS/PFOA/PFOS ?
PFAS/PFOA/PFOS (perfluorinated chemicals or PFCs) are used in hundreds of consumer products because of their non-stick properties. These include Teflon®, food packaging, clothing, carpet, furniture fabric, and firefighting foam.
Are PFAS/PFOA/PFOS in my tap water?
The tap water of approximately 16 million Americans in 33 states is known to be contaminated with PFAS/PFOA/PFOS. This number likely underestimates the number of Americans actually affected, as PFAS/PFOA/PFOS are currently unregulated. This means your water can still be considered legal but contain these chemicals. PFAS/PFOA/PFOS are readily found in the environment as a result of industrial run-off and pollution. When any of the 3,000 PFCs are absorbed into the ground, they can make their way into the water supply. There have also been cases of these chemicals being dumped into rivers and waterways by their manufacturers, causing mass contamination.
Are PFAS/PFOA/PFOS in my tap water harmful?
Even at extremely low levels, some of these chemicals may result in serious health problems, including cancer, developmental effects to fetuses during pregnancy or to breastfed infants (e.g., low birth weight, accelerated puberty), damage to liver tissue, and effects on the immune system and thyroid.1 Making matters worse, PFOA/PFAS/PFOS build up in the body over time. Since these chemicals are mostly man-made, the body isn’t designed to get rid of them, making these PFCs difficult for the average person to clear from their system. In one government study, 98% of subjects had PFOA or other PFAS in their blood samples.2
How much PFOA/PFAS/PFOS are safe?
PFOA/PFAS/PFOS are not safe for human consumption. They are toxic at incredibly low amounts. However, there is no legal limit for these chemicals. The Environmental Protection Agency’s non-enforceable health guideline of 70 parts per trillion (ppt) provides only marginal protection against the dangers of PFCs. For reference, 1 part per billion is 1 drop in an Olympic-sized swimming pool. If that single drop was divided into 100 parts, 7 of those parts would equal 70 ppt. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry has declared that even this guideline is 10 times higher than what it should be in order to protect your health.3
How do I remove PFOA/PFAS/PFOS from my tap water?
Clearly Filtered® with Affinity® Filtration Technology [crosslink to Technology page] gives you the power to remove up to 99.9% of PFAS/PFOA/PFOS from your tap water, giving you peace of mind that comes from knowing your drinking water is finally clean and safe. Basic water filters that rely on simple carbon (like Brita®) or charcoal are only effective at removing unpleasant odors and taste. These filters are not capable of stopping PFCs and instead allows them to pass right through the filter into the water you're drinking. More sophisticated technology like Clearly Filtered is required to provide this type of contaminant removal.
